Upcoming PS5 games

Updated: Jun 18, 2020

Here are the upcoming PS5 games line-up, from Horizon Forbidden West to Resident Evil 8.

The latest upcoming PS5 games were recently unveiled during Sony's latest Future of Gaming showcase, where we saw a generous helping of exciting next-gen titles. We even finally got to see the hardware for the very first time, but the games shown were more than enough to cause a lot of excitement. With the likes of the Horizon Zero Dawn sequel, Horizon Forbidden West, Resident Evil 8: Village, and Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, there's a lot to look forward to.

Whether you enjoy tucking into a big expansive RPG or getting your fill of action in an FPS, we know that PS5 load times will be cut way down thanks to the built-in integration of a new SSD - and just as nice, updates will go faster with no more lengthy copying

There's still a little while to wait until the PS5 officially launches at the end of the year in its Holiday 2020 release date window, but with the latest announcements, you have no shortage of reasons to start getting truly excited for what awaits you in the next generation.

Dirt 5

Developer: Codemasters Publisher: Codemasters Status: In development Release date: October 2020

Dirt 5's career mode will let players choose from events all over the world and in a variety of classes: regions from New York City to remote Greece await as you take on events in customizable rally calls, buggies, unlimited trucks, and rock bouncers. You'll also be able to play on your own, online, or in up to four-player split-screen multiplayer.

Godfall

Developer: Counterplay Games Publisher:  Gearbox Status: In development Release date: Holiday 2020

Gearbox has been one of the first developers to officially announce an upcoming PS5 game, and it will arrive in the form of Godfall. Apparently building on Gearbox's reputation with Borderlands (and most recently Borderlands 3), this is a "loot-slasher', third-person action RPG built around co-operative gameplay - although you can play solo too.  It stars knights and magic, so sound be kind of amazing. Basically think Borderlands with swords.

Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales

Developer: Insomniac Games Status: In development Release date: Holiday 2020

Yes, Miles Morales is swinging his way onto the PS5 in a new Spider-Man adventure. During the latest PS5 Future of Gaming event, we got to see a glimpse of the friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man in action, but it was pretty light on the details. Still, with its release date set for the console's launch on Holiday 2020, we can probably expect to see more from Miles soon. Ever since Insomniac released Spider-Man on the PS4 back in 2018, we've been hoping for more, and our hopes have been well and truly answered.

Outriders

Developer: People Can Fly Publisher: Square Enix Status: In development Release date: Holiday 2020

What happens if you blend Doom and Mass Effect? Well, it seems to be Outriders, a brand new IP from People Can Fly (Gears Judgment / Bulletstorm), and published by Square Enix. It features dark, sinister alien forces against a humanity that's desperate to survive. But there's a twist. Humanity is trying to inhabit a new planet called Enoch after Earth is rendered unusual, but a strange energy storm they're calling The Anomaly has gifted them all with powerful abilities. It's arriving on PS5 sometime this holiday season, so expect it to be a launch title.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla

Developer: Ubisoft Montreal Publisher: Ubisoft Release date: Holiday 2020

A new Assasin's Creed adventure is officially on the horizon, and this time it will transport us back to the Dark Ages as Viking assassin Eivor. Building on the RPG elements introduced by Assassin's Creed Origins and Assasin's Creed Odyssey, you'll be present with dialogue options, character customization such as tattoos and hairstyles, and all manner of weapons to try out. Set during the 9th century in Norway and England, you'll be spending most of your time leaping and climbing your way across four kingdoms in the UK. With a holiday 2020 release date, it's looks set to land on Sony's next-gen console.

Deathloop

Developer: Arkane Lyon Publisher: Bethesda Release date: Holiday 2020 Status: In development

We got our first proper look at Deathloop gameplay during Sony's Future of Gaming show, and it looks like it's shaping up to deliver some assassinating action with Ground Hog Day vibes. From the developer behind the Dishonored series, Deathloop sees two rival assassins locked in a time loop, with eight targets to eliminate. Colt, one of the assassins, is hellbent on taking out the targets, while Juliana appears to want to protect them from harm. We get to see some first-person combat with plenty of supernatural-looking elements and it's left us keen to learn more. It's currently set to be a timed exclusive on the PS5 and will also be coming to PC.

Gran Turismo Sport

Developer: Polyphony Digital Publisher: Sony Status: Out now on PS4

It's been a brief spell since Gran Turismo Sport arrived on PS4, but there's a reason why it's at the top of this list of potential upcoming PS5 games. The recent Wired article that revealed the PS5's official title, explains that the writer got to test a few games on a PS5 devkit. One of those included, and I quote, "a version of Gran Turismo Sport that Sony had ported over". It was being used to show off the new haptic capabilities of the PS5 controller, moving from driving on the dirt and the track. Now, it would be a bit of a waste to port the game over just for a tech test, so we expect GT Sport will be racing on over to PS5 around launch.

GTA 5

Developer: Rockstar North Publisher: Rockstar Games Status: Out now on PS4 Release date: TBC 2021

Sony kicked off its latest PS5 showcase with a helping of action from GTA 5, confirming that a shiny expanded version of Rockstar's wildly successful game is coming to the PS5 sometime in 2021. The trailer shows off some of the more recent DLC content, so it looks like this expanded version will be coming with everything and more. Not only that, but it will also be enhanced on the next-gen console.

Watch Dogs Legion

Developer: Ubisoft Toronto Publisher: Ubisoft Status: In development Release date: TBC 2020

Watch Dogs Legion is doing its whole hacking thing again, but this time it's adding even more of a dystopian slant by setting it in a post-Brexit London, which fills my English heart with sadness. But Legion will also ramp things up a bit by not providing you with a single protagonist, or even a preset team, but actually letting you craft your own squad from the entire London population. Each of London's NPC residents will have their own backstory, strengths and abilities, weakness and movesets - aka if you pick a spy Grandma, she's not going to be quite as agile, but still just as badass. But beware, in this new Watch Dogs title, permadeath is now a thing so maybe don't get too attached to your favourite granny. Elsewhere, it'll also feature the hacking tech gameplay that we know and love, just set against the backdrop of a very unhappy English capital.

Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2

Developer: Hardsuit Labs Publisher: Paradox Interactive Status: In development Release date: TBC 2020

Looking for a game with a bit of extra bite? Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2 puts you in the seedy underbelly of Seattle, which should suit you just fine as a vampire ready to test out your new fangs. Turned as an act of vampire terrorism during the 'Mass Embrace', you'll soon get caught up in vampire faction politics, where you're still just trying to deal with your new way of life. This is an RPG at its core too, filled with player choices, a strong narrative, and branching dialogue options too.

Gods & Monsters

Developer: Ubisoft Quebec Publisher: Ubisoft Status: In development Release date: TBC 2020

Building a little off the success of Assassin's Creed: Odyssey, the same time are diving again into Greek mythology to bring us Gods & Monsters. It's described as a "storybook adventure", and as you can see in the trailer above, it's set across a stylised and rather beautiful fantasy world where you're asked by the gods to take down Typhon, the most deadly creature of all Greek mythology, and all the other monsters he's spawned. It's going to be quite the legendary journey too, with the trailer already featuring the likes of Medusa, and plenty of Greek deities to boot.

Rainbow Six: Quarantine

Developer: Ubisoft Montreal Publisher: Ubisoft Status: In development Release date: TBC 2020

Rather than a spin-off from the very successful Rainbow Six Siege, this is something new, and a little bit more supernatural. You still play as a Rainbow Six Operator, but instead of human foes, you'll be tasked with taking down a totally new breed of alien parasite that's infecting the human race. In this you'll operate in squads of three, playing in PvE matches where the environment is filled with these new, terrifying, rather fast-moving foes.

Lord of the Rings: Gollum

Developer: Daedalic Entertainment Publisher: Daedalic Entertainment Status: In development Release date: TBC 2021

We are all so intrigued to see what a game where you play as the dual-personalities of The Lord of the Rings: Gollum will actually be like. And thankfully, that's exactly what Daedalic Entertainment is going to give us. It's been unveiled as one of the confirmed upcoming PS5 games, and will arrive sometime in 2021 to let you play as Gollum. The creature starts out as a prisoner in Barad-dûr, a fortress in Mordor, but eventually you will traverse more of Middle-Earth, with the developer proming "giant, persistent environments, each harbouring several questlines and a range of friendly or unfriendly faces" in an interview with Edge Magazine in early 2020. During that interview the game is also described as an "stealth-action-adventure with an intriguing dual-personality mechanic, gigantic levels, and a densely wrought aesthetic inspired by Tolkien's own drawings".

Resident Evil 8: Village

Developer: Capcom Publisher: Capcom Status: In development Release date: TBC 2021

Resident Evil 8 Village is officially on the way and it's set to come to the PS5 in 2021. The next entry in the Resident Evil franchise takes place a few years after Resident Evil 7, featuring Ethan and Mia. Only, another familiar is also back, and he appears to be causing a spot of trouble for Ethan. Chris Redfield enters the scene and is said to set off a chain of events that leads Ethan to a mysterious village desperate for answers. Oh, and it also appears to feature werewolves.

Hitman 3

Developer: IO Interactive Status: In development Release date: January 2021

Death awaits. Agent 47 is back in the upcoming instalment of Hitman in what will be the conclusion to the World of Assassination trilogy. We got to see a new debut trailer during Sony's latest PS5 reveal showcase, confirming it will be landing on the next-console sometime next year. Agent 47 is said to take part in "the most intimate, professional contract of his career". In a PlayStation blog post, it states that the "stakes are high and when all is said and done, Agent 47 and the world around him will never be the same again." Sounds like a very dramatic conclusion is in store.

Demon Souls remake

Developer: Bluepoint Games Release Date: TBC Status: In development

Demon Souls is back. Yes, the 2009 classic that spawned From Software's games Dark Souls and Bloodborne is being remade for the PS5. Known for its challenging difficulty, we didn't get to see any Demon Souls gameplay during its trailer debut in Sony's Future of Gaming stream, but what we did see is enough to get any From Software fans excited. Originally released on the PS3, Demon Souls will return with a pretty significant upgraded look.

Sackboy: A Big Adventure

Developer: Sumo Digital Publisher: Sony Status: In development Release date: TBC

It's been a while since we've seen Sackboy, the cute knitted protagonist of LittleBigPlanet, grace our screens, but the chap is back! This time, he's in an all-new platforming adventure that drops the LBP name and instead, opts to flesh out the gameplay-side rather than the creation aspect. Sackboy: A Big Adventure has a "deeply immersive and expressive control scheme", which includes the ability to bring a friend along for co-op antics. This looks like a system seller for families with young kids and any LBP fans out there.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

Developer: Insomniac Games Publisher: Sony Status: In development Release date: TBC

Ever since the reboot of the first Ratchet & Clank game that launched on PS4 (and had an accompanying movie!) in 2016, fans have been clamouring for a brand new game in the franchise. And boy, have their dreams been answered. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is an all-new adventure following the dynamic duo through what seems to be multiple dimensions, with new tools in their arsenal. There's also a female Lombax who appears, although we don't know her name yet. Could we see another protagonist option, Assassin's Creed Syndicate-style?

Project Athia

Developer: Luminous Productions Publisher: Square Enix Status: In development Release date: TBC

Where do we start with Project Athia? This game that was "designed for PlayStation 5" is a console exclusive from Square Enix and it looks beautiful. The protagonist is seen leaping across cliffs, attacking huge wolves with tree root-esque abilities, and overlooking a gorgeous cloud-filled landscape from the top of a mountain. What's more is that famed screenwriter and author Gary Whitta (Star Wars: Rogue One, The Walking Dead) is in charge of a team of "A-list writers" working on the game, which means it could be something very special indeed.

Ghostwire: Tokyo

Developer: Tango Gameworks Status: In development Release date: TBC 2021

Ghostwire: Tokyo has officially been confirmed to be coming to the PS5 in 2021, and we also saw some gameplay footage showing off the first-person combat. Set in Tokyo, Japan, Tango Gameworks takes you to the city which has been overrun by paranormal threats. Strange occult events have caused devastation, and the vast majority of the city's population has mysteriously disappeared.  After you gain supernatural abilities of your own, it's up to you to explore and fend off evil spirits. Said to take full advantage of the PS5's hardware, Ghostwire Tokyo is set to deliver an immersive, supernatural experience.

Pragmata

Developer: Capcom Status: In development Release date: TBC 2022

Capcom revealed a mysterious new game called Pragmata that leaves more questions than it answers, but certainly piqued a lot of interest. Described as a "thought-provoking game", the trailer shows someone in what looks like a space suit in a futuristic setting, where they encounter a young girl and holo-cat. While it won't be coming until 2022, we're certainly eager to learn more about this rather enigmatic adventure.

Dying Light 2

Developer: Techland Publisher: Techland Status: In development Release date: TBC

Originally scheduled for release on PS4, Xbox One and PC in Spring 2020, Dying Light 2 recently got a major delay that stripped it of any kind of release window. While that's a huge blow for current-gen gamers, it makes the idea of a cross-generation release much more tangible. After all, developer Techland has already confirmed Dying Light 2 will come to PS5. If you're out of the loop, Dying Light 2 is the sequel to the immense parkouring, zombie-slaying adventure, and is set 15-years after the original. Techland itself describes the time period for this new game as the 'new Dark Ages', which suggests just how desperate humanity has become in this particular zombie apocalypse. Watch the above 4K demo just to see what you're in for.

Horizon Forbidden West

Developer: Guerrilla Games Status: In development Release date: TBC

Aloy is well and truly back. That's right, a Horizon Zero Dawn sequel has officially been revealed and it'll see Aloy head to post-apocalyptic San Francisco. The trailer looked absolutely gorgeous and bursting with vibrant colours, mysterious machines, and new environments to explore. We even see Aloy underwater wearing what appears to be some kind of breathing mask, which could mean we can expect some underwater sections. It's great to see that we'll be able to return to the rich world created by Guerrilla Games and experience a new journey on the PS5.

Starfield

Developer: Bethesda Softworks Publisher: Bethesda Status: In development Release date: TBC

Standing as Bethesda's first new IP in over a decade, Starfield is already looking incredibly intriguing. Bethesda's own Todd Howard has already confirmed that it will be an upcoming PS5 game, although neither he nor Bethesda itself has divulged much information about the game beyond the above announcement trailer that emerged at E3 2018. It hints - as does the title - that its a sci-fi RPG set somewhere in space, and from watching that space station get devoured, it's clear something is up.

Elder Scrolls 6

Developer: Bethesda Game Studios Publisher: Bethesda Status: In development Release date: TBC

Ah, the Elder Scrolls 6. The 37-second trailer that blew the world's mind at E3 2018. The game that we know nothing about beyond this same trailer, that is in development somewhere within Bethesda Game Studios along with Starfield. Because it is so far away from release, you can bet your bottom coin that it's going to appear - at some point - on the PS5 (although hopefully not whatever the PS6 could be).
