Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will cost more on PS5/Xbox Series X with a confusing upgrade path

As we mentioned early yesterday, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is releasing on November 13th on PlayStation 4, Xbox One & PC with the PlayStation 5 & Xbox Series X versions set to launch alongside these consoles. In a similar fashion to NBA 2K21, the next-gen path is confusing.

Firstly, the PlayStation 5 & Xbox Series X versions of the game, already costing $A10 more (EB Games already has it listed for $119.99). If you buy the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One version of the game and would like to upgrade, it gets difficult depending on the platform that you're on.

Obviously, both the PlayStation 4 & Xbox One versions will be playable on their respective next-gen consoles (but they won't have any enhancements). If you buy the digital cross-gen bundle, you actually save money, compared to if you bought it at EB Games, with it only setting you back $109.95 digitally (the standard edition is $99).

If you buy the PlayStation 4 version physically and want to upgrade to the PlayStation 5 version, you'll need to pay an upgrade fee. If you're wanting to upgrade from a physical Xbox One version of the game to the Xbox Series X version, this won't be possible, and you'll need to buy the game again.

PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5: Purchase the Cross-Gen Bundle on PlayStation 4 and receive a digital entitlement to both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 versions of the game. The PlayStation 4 version will download immediately to your console when Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War launches on November 13th. The PlayStation 5 version of the game will automatically become available for download from your account library once the PlayStation 5 launches later this year. If you purchase the Cross-Gen Bundle on PlayStation 5, you will also receive an entitlement to the PlayStation 4 version of the game.

Xbox One and Xbox Series X: Purchase the Cross-Gen Bundle on Xbox One and receive a digital entitlement to both the Xbox One and Xbox Series X versions of the game. The Xbox One version will download immediately to your console when Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War launches on November 13th. The Xbox Series X version of the game will automatically become available for download from your account library once the Xbox Series X launches later this year. If you purchase the Cross-Gen Bundle on Xbox Series X, you will also receive an entitlement to the Xbox One version of the game.
